After the U.S. entered WWII a new selective service act required that all men between ages 18 and 65 register for the draft. Between November 1940 and October 1946, over 10 million American men were registered.
Pfc. Earl Pochert, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ben Pochert, Port Hope, who was inducted into the Army in January has returned to Flushing camp, Long Island, N.Y., after spending five days with his parents here. Earl was one of the first men to be inducted from Port Hope and this was his first furlough.
Earl Pochert’s body was finally brought back to the United States on October 26, 1947, and buried near a cemetery near his parents farm in Gore Township, Michigan, near his home town of Port Hope.
Memorial Service for Cpl. Pochert – A memorial service will be held for Cpl. Earl Pochert, who was killed in action in Belgium on Jan. 3, 1945, at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran church, Port Hope, on Sunday, Feb. 11, at 2:30p.m. The service will be conducted by the Rev. K.T. Lohrmann, pastor of the church.
